While the material itself is flat with little texture, the surface of the collage takes on a sculptural element once enough paper has been layered. From a distance the medium is not immediately apparent and the collages can even appear to be digital drawings but upon closer inspection the uniqueness of the layered paper snaps into focus. Rather than collaging disparate images together, she creates one unified image from hundreds of pieces of hand cut paper.

In 2018 she was commissioned to create the season artwork for the Cutting Ball Theater in the Tenderloin.īergen works in her studio in the Mission District of San Francisco and continues to make intricate collages focused on the human impact of consumption and climate change upon the environment.įor the past five years Andrea Bergen has been creating intricate, animal-centric collages to express her anxiety regarding human driven environmental destruction.

The theme of the series was “Party Animals,” which featured lively vignettes of San Francisco’s animals celebrating and frolicking amongst the city’s landmarks. Bergen created a group of collages for the 2015 Art on Market Street Bus Kiosk Poster Series to commemorate the City Hall Centennial. Her work has been shown in several locations around the greater Bay Area including the Marin Museum of Contemporary Art and Morris Graves Museum in Eureka. In 2013 she graduated with honors from the Painting and Drawing Program at the California College of the Arts. Bergen’s animal-centric subject matter reflects her love of animals and showcases her talent for capturing not only their appearances but spirits as well. She was inspired by the melting pot of cultures in Oakland to create inclusive, environmentally conscious, and uplifting work. Her bold colors, vibrant graphics, and energetic style pull from street and graffiti art while the representationalism and spatial dynamism reference pop art and surrealism. Bergen’s artwork represents this convergence as her collages are a melding of traditional and contemporary art movements. Oakland’s art scene is a convergence of many cultures and gives a platform to a wide range of disciplines. Growing up in the Bay Area Bergen was surrounded by museums, galleries, street art and graffiti murals from an early age.

Peter has co-chaired the Education Committee for the Board of Directors for the MOCA Contemporaries, served on the Board of the Fellows of Contemporary Art and was an active member the Executive Arts Leaders Forum. He also served on LAUSD’s National Study Group which was charged with informing the nation’s second largest district as it planned the next 10 years of K-12 Arts Education. Peter helped to launch the region-wide LA Arts Month effort from 2009-2011 where he served on Planning Committee and the Program Committee. As past chairperson of the West Hollywood Arts and Culture Commission’s Art on the Outside public art effort, Peter led the city’s nationally regarded outdoor public art programming which has been praised in Art Forum, Vanity Fair and the New York Times. Beyond his commitments at LAAA, Mays has curated exhibitions throughout Southern California. Since joining LAAA in June 2005, Peter has implemented cultural exchanges with Switzerland (Basel), Korea, Germany and China, initiated collaborative programming with institutions like Harvard, MoCA and Otis College of Art. Peter Mays is the Executive Director of the Los Angeles Art Association (LAAA) and its premiere La Cienega exhibition space Gallery 825.
